Telugu belonging to Dravidian family

Andhra Pradesh used Andhra as their native language. In the past it was referred to as ‘Tenugu’ and later it was known as Telugu. It originated from the Proto-Dravidian language and is widely spanning the entire South-Asia from Baluchistan to Sri Lanka.

Speakers of the Telugu language

According to the 1981 census, about 5,06,24,611 people spoke Telugu but in 2011, it slowly gave rise to 8,11,27,740 Telugu speakers according to the census. It is also estimated that there were more than 75 million speakers in the early 21st century.

In 2001, around 7,40,02,856 Telugu speakers used the languages of Andhra Pradesh especially Telugu as their official language. This slowly gave rise to 81127740 speakers where (40658539 – Male and 40469201 – Female) making it a well-recognised Dravidian language.

The robust and sweetest language

The Telugu language is the official, robust and sweetest language that existed right from 400 BCE. The communities which use Telugu would be around 8,09,12,459 of the total population. About 200 years ago, around 400 Telugu speakers were taken to Mauritius.

Dialect of the Andhra language

Vadari or Waddar language is a dialect of the Telugu language spoken by a certain group of people known as Waddars scattered all over Southern India especially in Karnataka. There are about 1,98,020 people speaking the Vadari language.

Other scheduled language

The wide diversity of the region gave rise to other languages like Gondi, Naikdi, Chenchu, Koya, Kolami, Nakkala, Kaikadi (Yerukala), Kammara, Lambadi and Marathi with about 17,261 speakers. Gondi was the largest spoken language in Andhra Pradesh until Pardhans existed.

Some Andhs also speak Marathi as they had inscriptions in Maharashtri variant of the Prakrit language. Interestingly, Kolami is connected with its roots akin to Telugu language. Lambadis who migrated a few centuries ago retained their own language without any script.

Moreover, Telugu is used in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana which gets closely related to the Dravidian languages like Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam with long literary traditions. Smaller literary languages include Tulu and Kodava.

Over a period of time, it is said even Telugu has become different from their parent languages and also the growth of English is happening to fix its grounds at a faster pace unlike other states.
