The state language of Karnataka is the Kannada language. The Karnataka language is spoken in the southern states of India.  The Karnataka language (Kannada) which belongs to the Dravidian family is almost as old as the Tamil language.

More than 33 million people in Karnataka speak Kannada and additionally about 11 million Indians speak Kannada as the second language.  The scripts are taken from the 6th century records and it is originally closely akin to the Telugu script.

In 2001, around 3,79,24,011 people used Kannada as their mother tongue and in 2011, there is 3.61% increase in the count where around 43706512 people (22111292 - Male and 21595220 - Female) use Kannada as their native language.

The Badaga language

Badaga language is believed to have the Kannada dialect and is recognised as a separate dialect.  It shares the similarities between the Alu Kurumba-Badaga linguistic relationship.  The core grammar used in the Badaga converges in characteristics with the Nilgiris features.

Kannada Vs Telugu and Tamil

Kannada language may seem similar to the Telugu language but it is in fact more closely related to the Tamil  language.  The Kannadigas think that Kannada is close to Telugu but it shares its similarity with Tamil.

The Kurumbas

The Kurubas/ Kurumbas refers to ‘shepherd’ as it is derived from the word ‘Kuri’ which means sheep. So, traditionally these people had shepherding as their occupation.  This language is heading towards extinction in the present days.

Speakers of Kannada Kurumba language

In addition to speakers of the Kurumba language from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, it is spoken in the districts of Tamilnadu that include Teni, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Coimbatore, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Dharmapuri and Salem.

Recreation of Prakritha

Certain knowledge-based texts, literary texts, morphological and syntactic rules of Prakrit or Prakritha in Kannada language have been recreated quite for a long time.  Many words that are spoken in Kannada have their origin in Prakrit.

Other languages of Karnataka

There are about 50 tribal languages like Tulu, Koraga, Soliga, Yerava, Gouli, Siddi, Hakki Pakki, Bettakuruba, Jenukuruba, etc.  These languages are spoken by 30,244 people according to the census which was lastly taken in 2011.
